Paleochora Christmas Puzzle 2019

It’s been claimed – and justifiably so – that visitors coming to Paleochora for two, or even three weeks, can spend every day on a different beach. The two most popular, and within walking distance of everywhere, are PACHIA AMMOS (‘sandy’) and CHALIKIA (‘stony’ beach) facing west and southeast respectively, so one or other should be sheltered from summer breezes.

At the far (north) end of the former is LIMNAKI, a shallow pool ideal for young children. An hour’s sea-trip away are the lagoon and pink sands of ELAFONISI, though if you follow the E4 coastal path from KRIOS you’ll pass through VIENA, above RED beach, and finally to KEDRODASOS.

Other popular destinations by ferry are to SOUGIA, and further east, passing the usually deserted DOMATA beach, to LOUTRO, but if it’s busy here, consider an hour’s walk to empty LIKOS.

The E4 walk back from Sougia will take you to LISSOS, then over to tiny THUNDER COVE (sadly, no longer as perfect as pictured here after spring storms) , past the three ANIDRI beaches, and then the long KERATIDES as you near home.

West from Paleochora, the two beaches at GRAMMENO are always popular, as is AZZURRO; close to the road are PLAKAKI and KARAVOPETRA, the little-known TROCHALOU beach, and usually busy PSILOS VOLAKAS, where you may (or may not) be brave enough to leap from high.

And finally comes KALAMIA shoreline, where are the millstones (see Explore – August 2017).

Of the 23 beaches in BLOCK CAPITALS, 19 can be found in the word grid (vertically, hoizontally, diagonally.)

When you’ve found these, 18 unused letters remain; circle these, and read from left to right, top to bottom, to find three more beaches.

All we need to know is which is the one beach missing and which beach is included twice ?
