(out of print, but due to be revised and available next spring) describes a route to the fort from Spaniakos, but this is now overgrown and difficult to follow, so it seems better at present to make the climb from Azogires.\u00a0 A few words of advice ; don&#8217;t set out to walk by road to Azogires.\u00a0 It&#8217;s 8km, practically all uphill, with no water or shade en route, and will take the best part of two hours.\u00a0 If you can&#8217;t drive there, or arrange a lift, take a taxi.\u00a0 Coming back is easier, at least downhill, with a good chance of &#8216;hitching&#8217; a ride.<\/p>\n<p>Take the road west out of the village centre, which climbs to the Cave of the 99 Saints, and is clearly signed.\u00a0 After several bends, pass the recently built (and rather uninteresting) church of St John the Russian, and continue uphill to where the road finally bends right towards the cave (the descent of which is described in &#8216;Explore&#8217; July 2010).\u00a0 Leave the road (left) at this bend,\u00a0 passing through two wooden gates then along a track contouring around the hillside.\u00a0 This becomes rougher, ending after 1km .\u00a0 Then slant right for just a few metres to a \u201cgate\u201d in the wire fence (look for yellow waymarking to assist you).\u00a0 A faint footpath follows the fence, climbing gradually, until the fort \u2013 pirghos &#8211; comes into view.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/PA281165.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-905\" src=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/PA281165-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"PA281165\" width=\"363\" height=\"273\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cross rough ground, with a final climb to reach the fort at its NE corner (look for the remains of a well on the way up.)\u00a0 A &#8216;gate&#8217; in the fence gives access to the fort&#8217;s west and south sides, from where there are views down to Paleochora \u2026 and to the Skala.\u00a0 The coastline stretches along to Akrotiri Krios, and inland are the hills above Voutas and Sklavopoula.\u00a0 The peaks of Psilafi, Gingilos and Volakias in the White Mountains are visible, while far out to sea you might see the island of Gavdos.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/PA281160.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-908\" src=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/PA281160-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"PA281160\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/PA281160-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/PA281160.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Turkish occupation of Crete lasted from 1645 &#8211; 1913.\u00a0 Given the suffering and oppression endured by the Cretan people for these long years, it&#8217;s understandable that the fort has not been preserved or maintained in any way.\u00a0 Other towers in nearby villages have been completely destroyed.\u00a0 With a little imagination, you can picture how the fort once looked, as you explore the ruins.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/PA281162.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-906\" src=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/PA281162-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"PA281162\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/PA281162-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/PA281162.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To explore further, climb a little way NE above the fort to locate a hollow area, with a well in its<br \/>\ncentre, where undoubtedly cereal and other crops were grown.\u00a0 Higher still is a concrete (surveying) pillar from where the views are even more extensive, but north beyond here lies difficult and rocky terrain, so venture no farther.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/PA281164.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-907\" src=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/PA281164-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"PA281164\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/PA281164-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/PA281164.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The return to Azogires is by the same route, maybe with a visit to the cave.\u00a0 A warm welcome will await you in the Alfa cafe, where &#8216;Lucky&#8217;
