{"id":892,"date":"2013-10-19T16:58:41","date_gmt":"2013-10-19T13:58:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/?p=892"},"modified":"2022-10-08T17:03:40","modified_gmt":"2022-10-08T14:03:40","slug":"the-kambos-gorge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/the-kambos-gorge\/","title":{"rendered":"The Kambos Gorge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m always reluctant to reveal the locations of favourite places, and appalled when I see books and calendars entitled \u201cUndiscovered Crete\u201d, \u201cHidden Beaches of Crete\u201d and the like, for secret they will be no longer. But I must tell you about the Kambos Gorge and Platanakia beach, and you must go there, soon, for reasons outlined below.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s 40km from Paleochora to the village of Kambos on Crete&#8217;s west coast, around an hour&#8217;s drive. Although it&#8217;s much longer should you stop for a fresh orange &#8216;ximos&#8217; in Elos, a morning coffee in Kefali, and to take in the stunning views from the corniche road between there and Kambos. When the sea comes into sight, turn right on a narrowing path, through a wire &#8216;gate&#8217;, and descend rather precarious wooden steps into the gorge itself.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/P4250939.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-895\" src=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/P4250939-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"P4250939\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A path runs alongside the stream, flowing until early summer, through another gate, to reach a picnic site. Here you must cross the stream, the path then taking you through the narrowest and most scenic part of the gorge before rising to join a rough track. Left now, re-crossing the stream to a &#8216;rest area&#8217; with water source and (maybe) a toilet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/P4250936.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-896\" src=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/P4250936-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"P4250936\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/P4250936-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/P4250936.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The track winds westwards, and soon Platanakia beach comes into view, still far below &#8211; frustratingly so as the rough road takes a circuitous loop, passing a small white chapel, to reach a plateau with animal feeding troughs and nearby ruined shepherds&#8217; huts. But between then and September, someone (in their wisdom or folly) bulldozed a wide track, obliterating the footpath, all the way to the beach. Millions of years of unspoilt beauty desecrated in days, and part of Crete&#8217;s spectacular coastline destroyed for ever.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/PA021090.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-899\" src=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/PA021090-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"PA021090\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/PA021090-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/PA021090.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Go there soon, for by next summer there may well be a car-park, &#8216;cantina&#8217;, sun-beds and the aroma of suntan cream on a crowded beach. Go during the mild days and warm seas of autumn, or on a wild winter&#8217;s day with westerly waves crashing against the shoreline, and enjoy the solitude while it lasts.<\/p>\n<p>Return to Kambos is by the same route, rising 300m from sea level to the village where, in season, there are a couple of tavernas.
