and almost entirely level &#8211; route described below.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"515\" height=\"386\" src=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Start-here-.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Start-here-.jpg 515w, https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Start-here--300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 515px) 100vw, 515px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Start here &#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Park at one of the hotel\/tavernas in Omalos \u2018village\u2019, the \u2018Exari\u2019 being open all-year round, others are often closed in winter.&nbsp; Just 350m ahead is the road junction (to Sougia) where the walk starts.&nbsp; It\u2019s circular, so can be followed in either direction, although it seems better to walk clockwise, instead of \u2018widdershins\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So set off SE towards the Gorge of Samaria.\u00a0 Five km distant towers the dark, lowering north face of Gingilos, its summit mythologically the Throne of Zeus, king of the Greek gods, who was born and raised in the Diktaean Cave in eastern Crete.\u00a0 Closer, and more benign, are the slopes of Strifomadi, where some two decades ago a ski resort was proposed and planned, but which, with unpredictable snow levels, happily never materialised.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"386\" height=\"515\" src=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/The-long-road.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/The-long-road.jpg 386w, https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/The-long-road-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 386px) 100vw, 386px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The long road<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>After just a few minutes (500m) along the often busy \u2018main\u2019 road, turn right (SW) on a track which bisects the plateau.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s a long road that has no turning\u2026\u201d but this one is arrow straight for 1.7km.\u00a0 With fertile soil and a cool climate, a variety of crops, especially cereals, potatoes and apples, have been grown here for centuries, with summer grazing for sheep and goats.\u00a0 On the plateau, around April when the winter snows have melted, appear masses of rare and strikingly colourful tulips &#8211; <em>\u00a0\u2018tulipa bakeri\u2019 \u2013 <\/em>which are endemic to Crete.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"515\" height=\"386\" src=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Apple-crop.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3345\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Apple-crop.jpg 515w, https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Apple-crop-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 515px) 100vw, 515px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Apple crop<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>At its far end, divert from the road to a viewing point above Lake Omalos, the reservoir built to service the water needs of the plateau.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"515\" height=\"386\" src=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Reservoir.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Reservoir.jpg 515w, https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Reservoir-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 515px) 100vw, 515px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Reservoir<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Then swing right and along a boardwalk to the small \u2018pond\u2019.\u00a0 The wooden hut is a \u2018hide\u2019 for birdwatchers, who might, especially during migrations, see egrets, finches, pipits, warblers and smaller raptors.\u00a0 The little pond, frozen in winter, is a small version of what was once, according to legend, a vast lake filling the entire Omalos plateau, the waters of which supposedly drained through the \u2018swallow hole\u2019 at Tzanis Cave, at the north of the plateau, emerging to become the source of the River Keritis and Agia Lake.\u00a0 Unlikely, but \u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"515\" height=\"386\" src=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Omalos-pond.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3349\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Omalos-pond.jpg 515w, https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Omalos-pond-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 515px) 100vw, 515px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Omalos &#8216;pond&#8217;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Keeping right, follow the winding road for nearly 2km, passing the small family church of Ag. Ephraim and several shepherds\u2019 houses, some still in use, others not, to reach the simple but welcoming taverna\/cafe of I Milia.\u00a0 After a break here, join the surfaced road bordering the north of the plateau for a further 3km walk back to Omalos.\u00a0 En route are several (now ruined) stone \u2018mitata\u2019, the small houses once used for cheese-making, especially the famed and excellent \u2018graviera\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"515\" height=\"386\"
