Cave."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Everyone knows the story of Polyphemus, the giant one-eyed Cyclops who imprisoned Odysseus and his crew in a cave, then ate six of them before Odysseus devised a cunning plan to escape.\u00a0 (If not, you must read Homer&#8217;s &#8216;The Odyssey&#8217;.)\u00a0 But did you know that Polyphemus&#8217; eye&#8217; view down to Sougia, and along the coast towards Profitis Ilias, then head slightly downhill on the path, now waymarked in black\/yellow with occasional cairns and E4 poles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The next hour or so, along a footpath as scenic as any in Crete, is an olfactory and visual delight, walking under fragrant Aleppo pine trees and brushing through aromatic thyme bushes, with Homer&#8217;s &#8220;wine dark sea&#8221; below.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-308\" title=\"cave-walk-3\" src=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/cave-walk-3.jpg\" alt=\"cave-walk-3\" width=\"478\" height=\"639\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/cave-walk-3.jpg 478w, https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/cave-walk-3-224x300.jpg 224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 478px) 100vw, 478px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Eventually the path swings inland, heading up towards a col\/saddle.\u00a0 The E4 continues east, to Profitis Ilias church and\u00a0 on to Agia Roumeli,\u00a0 as described in our book (see below), but the route to Polyphemus&#8217; where the nymph held Odysseus captive for seven years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-313\" title=\"cave-walk-8\" src=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/cave-walk-8.jpg\" alt=\"cave-walk-8\" width=\"511\" height=\"382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/cave-walk-8.jpg 639w, https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/cave-walk-8-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 511px) 100vw, 511px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Return to Sougia by the same route in time for a swim and the late afternoon ferry back to Paleohora.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, continue on to Koustoyerako.\u00a0 The path traverses into and out of a shallow gully, but then is intermittent or non-existent.\u00a0 Follow the waymarking carefully, via three isolated pine trees, and a final ascent to meet a track to the right (north) of radio\/&#8217;phone masts.\u00a0 Turn right along the track for 3 km into Koustoyerako, pausing at the first bend to look (with care!) into an enormous crater.<\/p>\n<p>More about Koustoyerako another time.\u00a0 From here it&#8217;s around two hours back to Sougia ; the top bends of the main road can be avoided by an old trail to Livadas, which begins left of the village cafenion.\u00a0 Below Livadas, leave the road for a track heading south, climbing slightly, then winding down into Sougia, and passing en route &#8211;
