Some history here; on the 28th February 1944 the leader of the Selino \u201candartes\u201d, New Zealander Dudley Perkins, was killed, along with Cretan Andreas Vandoulas, in a German ambush. The full story is recounted in the later chapters of \u201cVasili, the Lion of Crete\u201d by Murray Eliot. A plaque on the main road approaching Omalos commemorates the event, and war hero Perkins rests in the Commonwealth War Cemetery at Souda Bay.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Perkins-memorial.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1999\" src=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Perkins-memorial.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"464\" height=\"619\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Perkins-memorial.jpg 576w, https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Perkins-memorial-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 464px) 100vw, 464px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As the road bends west, our route heads north to begin the descent of the long valley towards Lakki. Initially contouring around the hillside, the path drops to the oleander-filled streambed, joins a smaller valley and then turns north-east.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1997\" style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Long-valley.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1997\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1997\" src=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Long-valley.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Long-valley.jpg 576w, https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Long-valley-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1997\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Long valley<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Wilson&#8217;s &#8216;time allowance&#8217; from Stefanoporo to where the valley meets the Achlapidiotis river is 1 hr 15 mins, and another 20 mins for the \u201csting in the tail\u201d climb of 115m into Lakki, but it took us much longer. A sudden, violent and heavy rainstorm \u2013 in mid-June! &#8211; resulted in us sheltering out of the wind and rain under a lightweight nylon (and super effective) KISU \u2013 &#8216;Karrimor&#8217; Instructor Survival Unit \u2013 for 40 minutes until conditions improved. Always be prepared, even in Crete in mid-summer. But afterwards, the path was wet, and rocks slippery, so progress was inevitably slower and careful.<\/p>\n<p>And then the final climb to Lakki, to meet John in the kafenion by the &#8216;platea&#8217;, where a thought-provoking statue commemorates Cretan resistance to three occupations \u2013 Venetian, Turkish and German.
