And not just any waterfall, but the 15m cascade at Retzakas, reputedly the highest in the Selino and Kissamos regions, and possibly the highest in western Crete.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the prolonged wet months, the fall may well be dry after April ; even so, this circular 4-hour walk is an enjoyable introduction to the &#8216;enneachora&#8217; (nine villages) area of SW Crete. En route lies plenty of interest, all signposted : first the ruined &#8216;Hamam&#8217;, a reminder of the long Turkish occupation, then the former school, and a little further on, the \u201cMother of God\u201d church (Panagia), b. 1858.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1973\" style=\"width: 397px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Panagia-church.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1973\" class=\" wp-image-1973\" src=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Panagia-church.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"397\" height=\"529\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Panagia-church.jpg 576w, https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Panagia-church-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 397px) 100vw, 397px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1973\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Panagia church<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Higher comes a sign to a &#8216;Big Olive Tree&#8217;, but this is quite a diversion, and nothing as impressive as similar trees at Anisaraki and Palea Roumata. And inevitably \u2026 \u201cElate, come\u201d \u2026 and we were handed two large glasses of warm liquid straight from the still. Pass left of a house, beyond which \u201cthe road goes ever on and on, and we must follow it, if we can \u2026&#8221; until it crosses the valley, and over a (usually) shallow stream. Logically, the fall should be in the steep-sided ravine here, but it&#8217;s not \u2013 it&#8217;s in the next one, a short distance further. But after just 80 metres, look carefully up left, for faded metal markers on olive trees, not easy to spot.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s no path climbing through the terraces, but sporadic waymarking continues (yellow arrows) and will lead you to the stream and up to the waterfall, hopefully impressive enough to justify the visit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Waterfall-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1980\" src=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Waterfall-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Waterfall-2.jpg 576w, https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Waterfall-2-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Return by the same route to the road junction, and turn right on the surfaced road, passing Timeos Stavros church, with fine views to Plokamania far below, to Vathi. And from there easily down the main road, in twenty minutes or so, back to Plokamiana.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Waterfall-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1981\" 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re lucky enough to view the fall at its best, as we have this winter, Robert Southey&#8217;s onomatopoeic verses describing &#8216;The Cataract at Lodore&#8217; in the English Lake District may come to mind :<\/p>\n<p>\u201c A sight to delight in ; confounding, astounding,<br \/>\nDizzying and deafening the ear with its sound.<br \/>\nDashing and flashing and splashing and clashing,<br \/>\nAnd so never-ending but always descending ..\u2026.\u201d<br \/>\nAlthough no Poet Laureate, here&#8217;s my own contribution :<br \/>\nWe know all about Niagara,<br \/>\nAnd seen pictures of Victoria,<br \/>\nBut the prettiest of them all \u2026<br \/>\nIs Retzakas waterfall.<\/p>\n<p>* Paleochora&#8217;s rainfall in January 2019 measured 194mm,
