and &#8216;Special Offers&#8217;, and here&#8217;s one you can&#8217;t possibly refuse \u2013 enjoy one longish (5km) walk from Anidri, and get a shorter one from Vlithias absolutely free.<\/p><div class=\"vwoyx69d4cf73cda03\" ><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<!-- convertri page leaderboard -->\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:inline-block;width:728px;height:90px\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1583078900392636\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"4520084506\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/div><style type=\"text\/css\">\r\n.vwoyx69d4cf73cda03 {\r\nmargin: 5px;padding: 0px;\r\n}\r\n@media screen and (min-width: 1201px) {\r\n.vwoyx69d4cf73cda03 {\r\ndisplay: block;\r\n}\r\n}\r\n@media screen and (min-width: 993px) and (max-width: 1200px) {\r\n.vwoyx69d4cf73cda03 {\r\ndisplay: block;\r\n}\r\n}\r\n@media screen and (min-width: 769px) and (max-width: 992px) {\r\n.vwoyx69d4cf73cda03 {\r\ndisplay: block;\r\n}\r\n}\r\n@media screen and (min-width: 768px) and (max-width: 768px) {\r\n.vwoyx69d4cf73cda03 {\r\ndisplay: block;\r\n}\r\n}\r\n@media screen and (max-width: 767px) {\r\n.vwoyx69d4cf73cda03 {\r\ndisplay: block;\r\n}\r\n}\r\n<\/style>\r\n\n<p>But first, some Cretan history.\u00a0 When the Minoan civilisation ended c. 1450 BC, the island was occupied by the Mycenaeans, a war-like people intent on expansion, until c.1100 BC they were displaced by the Dorians, warriors from northern Greece.\u00a0 During the Dorian period Crete was divided between rival groups, emerging as constantly warring city-states vying for power.\u00a0 In western Crete were Aptera, Kydonia (Chania), Polyrenia, Yrtakina, Pikilassos, Kandanos, and the closest to Paleochora was above Kadros.<\/p>\n<p>These were heavily defended, and with regard to Kadros, Tony Fennymore wrote :<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em> \u201cEspecially noteworthy in the Selino region are the remains of the system of defences.\u00a0 Four fortified towers built in the polygonal style \u2013 one above the modern Anidri, one near Azogires, one near Spaniakos and one near Vlithias \u2013 controlled all the likely entrances to the valley.\u00a0 These works must have been especially useful during the Hellenistic years, (323BC \u2013 67BC) when Crete\u00a0 suffered continually from civil wars, and there existed as well, danger from pirates at sea.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The four towers Tony mentions were to protect the Dorian city of Kadros (see &#8216;Explore&#8217; September 2009, or Walk 5 in my \u201cTen Walks around Paleohora.\u201d)\u00a0 Our first walk is to visit the tower above Anidri.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Keep-going.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1503\" src=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Keep-going-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Keep-going-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Keep-going-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Keep-going.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">From the village centre, walk on north along the road towards Prodromi, and after \u00bd km or so, turn left, signed \u201cAncient Tower of Anydroi.\u201d\u00a0 The road soon becomes unsurfaced, rising steadily through the Anidri \u201chousing estate\u201d, a development over the last fifteen years, to reach a similar sign confirming you are on the correct route.<\/p>\n<p>Several bends later, you&#8217;ll reach the &#8216;tower&#8217; itself, with an information board giving details of its history.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Anidri-tower.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1502\" src=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Anidri-tower-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Anidri-tower-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Anidri-tower-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Anidri-tower.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The four towers, at Vlithias, Spaniakos, Azogires and here above Anidri \u201ccompose a network of watch\/beacon towers located on hill-tops that surveyed the valley.\u00a0 They constituted an organised tele-communications network that transmitted coded messages previously agreed, at a distance up to 130 km. Contact by means of visual signals was especially useful in emergency cases and warfare.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1501\" style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Anidri-tower-view.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1501\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1501\" src=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Anidri-tower-view.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Anidri-tower-view.jpg 576w, https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Anidri-tower-view-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1501\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anidri tower view<\/p><\/div>\n<p>At a height of 300m, the Anidri tower, which \u201cmight also have housed a small army force\u201d,\u00a0 held a commanding view over the Azogires valley and down to the coast.\u00a0 The tower to the west, at Azogires \u2013 Loutra &#8211; Christmas competition<\/strong><br \/>\nA record number of entries, from many different countries, confirms that Paleochora is indeed a special place.\u00a0 Judged by Markella Perraki, the winner was <strong>Liselott Sjoqvist<\/strong>,\u00a0 who chose Photo 9 (the view from our \u201cstony beach\u201d) because :\u00a0 <em>\u201c I can hear the waves and feel peace.\u00a0 In my mind, when I need to calm myself, I often go there and it helps.
