Which gave us eleven hours ashore, ample time to explore the small island, which measures just 10.5 km x 3.5 km, with an area of 22 sq.km.<\/p>\n<p>We booked tickets with Maria at Selino Travel (incredibly, just 20 euros return, and free for my mountain bike) and, because of the early start, stayed overnight at the Elena Beach Hotel, just five minutes from Kissamos port (highly recommended, they even made us coffee at 6.30am.)<\/p>\n<p>Dawn broke as we sailed out of Kissamos Bay, alongside the Gramvousa peninsula, with retrospective views later to the two islands of Imeri and Agria Gramvousa.\u00a0 Soon Antikythira appeared on the distant horizon, and on schedule, disembarked eight passengers at the port of Potamos \u2013 two islanders returning home, and six of us \u201cday-trippers.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1439\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Into-Akythera.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1439\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1439\" src=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Into-Akythera-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Coming in...\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Into-Akythera-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Into-Akythera-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Into-Akythera.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1439\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Coming in&#8230;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We thought it advisable to find somewhere for an evening meal before the journey home, so we\u00a0 headed for a taverna overlooking the bay.\u00a0 This, the only one as it transpired, was also the Post Office, a (very limited) mini-market, and Tourist Information Centre ; someone, possibly the island&#8217;s mayor, disappeared, soon returning with detailed maps describing several places we must visit during our brief stay.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Akythera.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1436\" src=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Akythera-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"akythera\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Akythera-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Akythera-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Akythera.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We \u201cbooked\u201d a meal for around 7.30pm, then split up, Jane and Michelle setting off one way, Judy and Ulrike another, Dick, a keen ornithologist, heading for the island&#8217;s bird observatory (which sadly was closed), and me attempting to pedal south to the lighthouse at Apolytaras on the southern point of the island.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1435\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Akythera-lthouse.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1435\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1435\" src=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Akythera-lthouse-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"The lighthouse\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Akythera-lthouse-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/main\/domains\/thepaleochorasite.com\/public_html\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Akythera-lthouse.jpg 576w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1435\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The lighthouse<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Antikythira is best-known for the shipwreck, discovered by sponge divers from Symi in 1900, at a depth of c.50m . Thought to have been Roman, and foundered off the NE coast in the 1st century BC, it contained a wealth of artifacts, many brought to the surface by the French underwater explorer Jaques Cousteau in 1976.\u00a0 Among them was the \u201cAntikythira Mechanism\u201d, possibly the first-ever &#8216;computer&#8217;, now in the Athens archaeological museum.\u00a0 Read about its fascinating history elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>An undulating surfaced road runs south to Galaniana, where is the church of Agios Myronas, the island&#8217;s patron saint.\u00a0 Annually on August 17th, the resident population of 45 increases to c.1000 with visitors, and islanders returning home for the \u201cfeast day.\u201d\u00a0 I rode on, along a rough track to where it ended, then took a stony path towards the lighthouse, now in view ; but with a kilometre to go, and a descent of 150m\u00a0 &#8211; and a similar distance\/ascent back &#8211;\u00a0 I gave up.\u00a0 Next visit\u2026&#8230;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1434\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Ag-Myronas.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1434\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1434\" src=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Ag-Myronas-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Ag. Myronas<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Instead, I cycled back north, past the heliport and through Charchaliana, left the bike and walked down to the small beach\/cove at Kamarela, below spectacular sea cliffs with rock arches.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1440\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Kamarela.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1440\" class=\"size-large 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1440\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kamarela<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It was mid afternoon and hot, even in October, and I needed a swim &#8211; but not here, too rocky and dangerous.\u00a0 So from one side of the island to the other, over to Xiropotamos beach, probably once the port of the now ruined Kastro (or Castle), a walled Hellenistic city dating back to the 4th century BC.\u00a0 Covering c. 3 sq.km, much of the polygonal encircling wall remains intact, and, cooled and refreshed by the swim, my 30-minute exploration was absorbing.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1443\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Xiropotamos.jpg\"><img me a steep climb (push!) back up to the \u201cmain\u201d road, and a fast descent to the harbour.\u00a0 We all re-assembled with stories to tell, and enjoyed a far more leisurely meal than anticipated ; the taverna owner announced &#8211; \u201cboat is coming, maybe one hour late.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1437\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thepaleochorasite.com\/bobsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Anti-kitty-ra.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1437\" chance, take a day-trip to Antikythira\u00a0 &#8211; and \u2026&#8230;.\u00a0 \u201c have a lovely time \u2026. \u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Footnote :<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 So enjoyable was our day on
